Hearing the cries of seagulls overhead had been a relief - and probably the only thing that had kept Persephone going after her body had gone numb from the chill of the water and her lungs started burning from the exertion of struggling through the stormy waters. She nearly fell when her hooves first met the sandy bottom, but managed to stay on her feet, and slowly half-swimmed, half-walked up the beach on trembling legs, still holding on to her rider's sealskin even though her jaw ached from dragging it through the water for so long. If Celia lost the sealskin, she'd never be able to take her seal shape again, and that would surely be a fate worse than death for the selkie.

Staggering through the surf, she eventually reached sand that was starting to dry out after being soaked by the storm, and in that sand, no doubt either tossed up there by the wind-whipped waves when the storm was raging at its worst or exposed by the pelting rain, the bones of something long dead, a human or something like it, she reckoned. It seemed to be the only one around likely to be able to tell her if Celia or Inca had passed through here.

"Excuse me," the Cavitto mare said, with a voice raspy from swallowing salty water and stray seal hairs, "could you please help me?"

The long-dead soul gave her a long hard not-look of disapproval that sent chills down her spine. "Why do you disturb me?"

"Our ship sank," Persephone replied, stopping right next to the weathered bones and hanging her head. "I was wondering if you might know if my friends passed by here? A selkie woman and a black horse with white thin stripes?"

"Not here," came the short reply from the dead soul.

"Thanks anyway." For a few moments, Persephone stood silent, just savoring the feel of solid - sort of, it being a sandy beach - ground under her hooves. "Can I do something for you? A proper burial?"

She got the sense the dead soul laughed at her. "If it keeps you and your ilk from bothering me."

Returning favors seemed like a good thing to do, and not leaving someone's bones out in the open seemed similarly suitable. Persephone laid the sealskin down and started the process of gently moving as many bones as she could find onto it.

I've moved this image to the "Chapter 2" folder, since the old Chapter 1 prompt and the new Chapter 2 prompts overlap slightly and this now qualifies as a response to Chapter 2. If you'd rather keep this an extra image or would rather use a different image as your Chapter 2 response, please just let me know :) Also Chapter 3 has been posted, check it out if you haven't already!
